Stuck on the yo-yo diet train or can't seem to drop the 30 pounds your doctor recommended? Here's the right information for the best results.

The question "How do I lose weight?" gets typed into Google 110,000 or so times per month. The answers that pop up are usually ridiculous "tips" that don't actually explain what a person needs to do in order lose weight and keep it off.
The truth is that sustainable weight loss occurs by making healthy alterations to your diet, eating fewer overall calories, and exercising at least 60 minutes 3-4 days per week.
How To Lose Weight:
  • Know how many calories your body needs.
  • Follow a balanced nutrition plan and track your calorie intake.
  • Exercise at least 60 minutes, 3-4 days per week and lift weights.
  • Perform high intensity interval training 3 days per week.
  • Aim for a 1 to 2 pound weight loss each week.
The trouble, however, is that most of us don't like to make changes to a lifestyle we're comfortable living. So eating less and moving more becomes a fierce battle. The couch and a bag of chips win far, far more often than they should. You can argue and struggle as much as you like, but the only scientifically proven way to lose weight and keep it off is through diet and exercise.

Some of you may be saying, "Well, no duh, but diets and exercise take way more time and effort than I'm willing to give. I don't want to eat salad and do P90X for the rest of my life." We completely understand and absolutely agree. Now, don't get us wrong: losing weight does take effort, but it often doesn't take so much effort that you need to ditch your favorite activities or foods.
Here's the basic, worthwhile information you need in order to lose weight and keep it off.

FAT MASS AND FAT-FREE MASS

One reason the answer to "How to lose weight?" is so messy is because it's actually the wrong question. You can break down your body weight into two main categories: fat mass and fat-free mass. Your fat-free mass includes your muscles, organs, bones, and connective tissue. In other words, your fat-free mass is what would be left if you removed every single fat cell from your body.
Muscle mass is a major component of your fat-free mass, and it should weigh more than your fat mass. Furthermore, muscle mass has a huge impact on your metabolic rate; namely, the more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn at rest. Muscle also helps to support your joints, helping to improve balance and reduce the risk of injury.

Your fat mass is just that: fat. Now, your body needs fat. There is an essential amount that each body needs in order to maintain its natural functions. That amount will vary between body type, age, sex, physical activity level, and fitness goal. For the general population, the levels accepted as healthy are between 21-32 percent for women and 8-19 percent for men.1 Higher levels of fat can lead to weight-related health risks such as type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, and cardiovascular disease.
All of this information boils down to one point: Losing weight in a healthy way means losing fat.

DIETING 101

In order to lose fat, you're going to have to change what you put into your body. Your body needs food to carry out its functions so you can stay alive. But people are really good at eating more food than they need, so the excess gets stored as fat. It doesn't really matter whether those extra calories come from cake, protein shakes, or spaghetti; if you eat more than what your body can use, it gets stored.
Dieting is the most difficult part of the fat-loss process for most people. It's estimated that 45 million Americans go on a diet each year.2 Given the current rates of obesity in this country, we can clearly see the success rate is low.
So, we want you to let go of the word "diet." Not only does that word have a negative connotation, but it also usually means you're doing it for a short period of time.
Instead, think of the food you put into your body as your nutrition, which is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Every person has a different palate, a unique attitude toward food, and various likes and dislikes. That means you need to find a nutrition plan that works best for you.
Your nutrition plan should be based upon how many calories you need each day to fuel your body. Because we know that fat loss occurs when you spend more calories than you take in, it's smart to know how many calories you're eating and using each day.
Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) is how many calories you'd need to maintain weight if you did nothing all day. Your BMR can be altered by your lifestyle. This handy-dandy total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) calculator, which is based on the Mifflin-St. Jeor equation, will take your BMR and factor in additional calories based upon your activity level, age, and gender.

skin glow

One of the many perks of my job is the opportunity I get to travel to new destinations and experience new cultures throughout the year. I’m beyond grateful for these experiences, but as with everything in life, they do come at a cost. The biggest cost of all is how it affects my skin.
Our skin can often be one of our most neglected areas, despite it being the largest organ on our body. We do, after all, live in it!
Aside from the itchy, dry skin that air conditioning on long-haul flights can cause, my skin is constantly exposed to new and often harsh environments when away. This means humidity, dry weather, rain — you name it.
Over the years, I’ve really started to take care of my skin. And I’ve noticed a massive difference when I began to look at things from the inside out. Aside from caring for your skin on the surface, often the biggest change can be seen once you start fueling your skin cells from the inside.
Here are a few tips for getting your skin to glow from the inside out!

1. What to eat

fruits
We all know the saying, “You are what you eat.” But so few of us really take the time to actually understand and appreciate how the food we put in our bodies affects our overall health, energy, and appearance.
The best way to truly get your skin to glow from the inside out is by ensuring that you’re eating a variety of superfoods. Vitamin C is a powerful superfood and antioxidant. It’s needed to maintain a strong immune system and is a key ingredient in giving you healthy, radiant skin.
Thankfully, it isn’t too difficult to find it in many fruits and vegetables! Besides oranges, you can also get good amounts of vitamin C in blueberries, papaya, strawberries, kiwi, and even sweet potatoes! One easy way to add some of these to your diet is to mix some blueberries in with yogurt or cereal at breakfast.
Foods high in healthy fats such as avocado, nuts, and seeds can also provide a plethora of benefits — plus they keep you fuller for longer!

2. What to drink

smoothies
One way I’ve managed to make sure I get enough water per day — 13 cups for men, 9 cups for women — is to always have two 1-liter bottles of water in the fridge that I sip from throughout the day. Once I’m done with both of them, I know that between those and whatever else I’ve had to drink, my daily water intake is good for the day. And my skin is well-nourished!

Coconut water

A fairly new discovery for me has also been coconut water. Coconut water has intense hydrating properties and is also a good source of vitamin C as well as potassium, calcium, and magnesium.
It’s safe to say that I’m now well and truly addicted — and in good company, as I know Victoria Beckham is a fan, too!

Fresh juices

Juices and smoothies are also great for getting various nutrients in one healthy serving. The vitamins and nutrients they contain are good for healing your skin and maintaining its health. To avoid preservatives and added sugars — which can wreak havoc on the skin — try making your own rather than buying from the store.

3. What to put on your face

mosturizer

Yes, most creams and ointments are technically both topical — but only the very best products revitalize your skin from the inside out, so it’s worth investing in those you know will penetrate the skin and get to work from the inside out!

Try using masks

Masks can be a great way to provide much-needed hydration, penetrating deep within to draw out excess oils, clear away dead skin, and boost moisture.
One of my favorite masking brands is GlamGlow, as they have a plethora of skin-loving products which cater to a variety of skin types. I’m often cynical about the notion of a product transforming your skin, but after the first use of the SuperMud Clearing Treatment mask, my skin looked noticeably more radiant and had a definite glow.

Remember that your face isn’t uniform

GlamGlow are also huge advocates of the multi-masking trend, which encourages you to pinpoint which areas of your complexion might have different needs. For example, many of us suffer from oily T-zones, but dry cheeks — so it’s worth catering to each individual area to really make the most of your pamper time and achieve that much coveted ‘glow’.

Pay attention to the seasons

Your skin changes throughout the year, just like the seasons. So what works for you in the summer, often isn’t going to be the best remedy for the winter.
As is often the case, we need a more hydrating and intense moisturizerfor the winter months, when the cold makes our skin dryer, and a lighter moisturizer for the summer. Ideally, with an SPF to protect our skin from the harsh UV rays of the sun.
For winter, I’d recommend Neal’s Yard Remedies Almond Moisturizer, which is vitamin rich and perfect for easily irritated skin. With a blend of sweet almond and evening primrose oils, it helps to tone, balance, and protect your skin, while also banishing dryness.
To banish those pesky dry flakes on our body, try Lola’s Apothecary Orange Patisserie Warming Body Souffle. Not only does it smell good enough to eat, with notes of orange drizzle cake and warm ginger and vanilla spices, but it’s also very nourishing: it contains coconut butter, which is rich in vitamin E and essential fatty acids!
For the warmer months, I’d recommend the Lancer Sheer Fluid Sun Shield moisturizer which contains SPF30, a must! Coveted by the likes of Victoria Beckham, Lancer’s skin care range is incredibly hydrating, bringing your skin back to a perfect equilibrium. It’s also not too heavy feeling on your skin, so it’s perfect for taking away on your travels!

Wear sheet masks

masks
Air conditioning on long-haul flights can be damaging to the skin, and leave your skin feeling extremely dry and tight when you step off the plane. However, since I’ve discovered sheet masks, my whole skin care travel routine has changed!
Sheet masks are a little bit less messy than regular masks, as they are already saturated in powerful skin-loving ingredients. All you need to do is pop them onto your face and leave them for 10-15 minutes so it can absorb all of the good stuff. I love the Estée Lauder Double Wear 3 Minute Priming Moisture Mask, which offers nourishment and hydration for clean, smooth, and clear skin.
Rather than dealing with the struggle of decanting my bottles to meet the liquid restrictions for carry-on luggage, it’s so much easier to just get comfy, put on a sheet mask, and sit back and relax while watching a film.

Use the right oils for your skin
No one wants to have oily skin, but that doesn’t mean natural oils can’t play a role in keeping our skin healthy. I use Emma Hardie’s Brilliance Facial Oil in the evening so that the hard-working formula can work to repair my skin while I sleep. It smells absolutely beautiful and with nine essential oils including lavender, it is perfect for helping you drift off. You can mix in your oil with a nighttime moisturizer to provide a protective barrier against the cold, harsh air.
If you have dry, flaky skin that reacts to the changing weather, look out for Hyaluronic acid on the ingredients list of any product you use, as it can leave your skin feeling oh so radiant after clearing away all those pesky dry flakes. One of my favorites is the Pestle & Mortar Pure Hyaluronic Serum, which comes in its purest form and targets dehydration, dullness, and fine lines without irritating sensitive skin.
For full body radiance, my go-to is Lola’s Apothecary, who offer an incredible range of sensual, calming, and fragrant oils to take care of your skin. The Delicate Romance Balancing Body and Massage Oil contains 30 percent rosehip oil, which helps to reduce stretch marks, age spots, and fine lines, as well as Argan oil, which boosts radiance and improves skin texture. It’s a rather versatile bathroom staple because you can use it for face, body, hair, and nails. Plus, it smells absolutely incredible, with notes of sweet orange, vanilla, lemon, and rose!

Bottom line

Regardless of how old you are or what your lifestyle is, it’s important to make a conscious effort to look after your skin. The skin you live in is yours forever, so take the time to treat it well. In return, it will take care of you!

There are plenty of really good reasons to get a dog(think: adulting, companionship, rescue, parenthood training, or just the inability to resist a totally heart-melting face).
Not like you need more convincing, but owning a fur baby can also improve your health. Studies show dogs can help lower your blood pressure and cholesterolreduce depression, stress, and anxietymotivate you to exercise; and even help you lose weight. It's like the gym buddy you've always wanted... only way cuter.
"A dog may just be your greatest workout partner ever," says Adam Rosante, strength and mental performance coach and dog lover who trains with his pup every morning. "There are no plans to be made or broken. No dramatic stories to commiserate over. Just a hard-working, fun-loving buddy to keep pace by your side. In fact, if you're willing to put in a little effort and consistency on the front end, your dog can actually hold you accountable to your workouts."
He's not kidding: Rosante trained his dog by placing a toy and leash by the front door next to his sneakers. After two weeks of a consistent morning routine, his dog now has a habit of waking him up on days Rosante tries to sleep in.
"Dogs are highly trainable," he says. "They just need love, positive reinforcement, and consistency from you. If your dog isn't used to a routine like this, give it time, have patience, and be consistent."

That consistency is key, and there are few things more regular than your four-legged friend needing to go outside for a walk, which you can turn into a full-body training session with just a few bodyweight exercises.
How to use this list: You'll need a leash, a throwable dog toytreats, and a shallow cup or collapsable bowlfor your friend for this workout. (Check out Chewy for great options.) Perform each exercise below in order for the suggested amount of reps. If your dog doesn't cooperate right away (ours didn't for this shoot!), don't stress. Do your best to train your pooch and just have fun with it.
Important to note: If you have a flat-snout dog like a French bulldog, extend the rest periods to make sure your pup is getting enough oxygen. These breeds aren't able to take in full breaths the way other breeds do. If in doubt, ask your vet for activity recommendations.

Warm-Up Jog

bodyweight workout - how to workout with dog
Start out with a light jog to a nearby park, field, or beach. This usually works best after your dog does his business. Then, work on training the dog to stay focused on the task (jogging) rather than getting distracted by every scent he finds. Use a leash to help control speed and guide the route. Taking the same route often will help your dog know what to expect, but you can also switch it up from time to time.
Make it harder: For a cardio challenge, pick up the speed and run for your desired distance or time.

Squat & Throw

Dog Workout: Squat Throw
Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding the dog toy in both hands. Hinge at hips and send butt back to lower down into a squat. (Go as low as you can while keeping chest lifted and without losing the natural curve in lower back.) As you begin to rise, explode up onto your toes arching back as you throw the toy as far back over your head and behind you as possible. As soon as your dog returns with the toy, that's one rep. Repeat for 10 reps.

Reverse Lunge With Torso Twist & Treat

Dog Workout: Reverse Lunge Twist
Break a treat into five small pieces. Let your dog smell them in your hands, then close hands into fists and hold directly in front of chest. Standing with feet hip-width apart, step left foot back and lower into a lunge. At the bottom of the move, twist torso over your front thigh, then reverse the move to return to stand. Repeat on the other side. That's one rep. Complete 10 reps. At the top of every other rep, reward your dog with a treat.

Four-Way Run

Dog Workout: 4-way run
Place something on the ground to indicate a starting line. Break a treat into four small pieces and let your dog smell it in your hands. From the starting line, run backward for 40 yards, then run forward to starting line. Then, lateral-shuffle 40 yards to the left and lateral-shuffle to the right back to starting position. Repeat the 40-yard shuffle to the right, then back to start. Finally, run backward again for 40 yards and sprint as fast as you can back to the starting line. Give a treat. That's 1 round. Complete 4 rounds.

Burpees & Bounds

Dog Workout: burpees
Start standing. With your dog's attention, throw the toy as far as you can. Perform as many burpees as possible until your dog returns with the toy. Repeat 3 to 5 times. Each time, aim to throw the toy further and beat your last round of burpees.

Russian Twist With a Treat

Dog Workout: Russian Twist
Sit on the ground with feet flat and a treat in your hand, broken into five small pieces. Let your dog smell it. Lean back about 45 degrees and lift your heels. While keeping back straight, twist your torso to the left and tap hands to the floor, then twist your torso to the right and tap hands to the floor. That's 1 rep. Complete 10 reps, giving your dog a treat after every other rep.

Toss & Stretch

Dog Workout: Toss Quad
Throw the toy as far as you can. Bring right heel to right butt to stretch your quad. Try to keep knees in line and pelvis tucked under. Hold the stretch until your dog returns. Repeat the throw and stretch with the opposite quad, hamstrings, calves, and upper back.

Cool-Down Walk

Dog Workout: Walk
Walk briskly home.
